How It Works

An electret microphone converts sound pressure into a small electrical signal. When sound waves reach the microphone diaphragm, the internal capacitive structure changes, producing a corresponding electrical audio signal.

Because the raw microphone signal is relatively small, the microphone is generally connected to a biasing and preamplifier circuit before being fed into an ADC, audio codec, amplifier, or microcontroller input.

For applications such as sound detection or voice processing, the microphone can be combined with an amplifier and signal-processing circuit to allow a microcontroller such as an Arduino or ESP32 to analyze the captured audio.

Compatible Platforms

The microphone can be incorporated into projects using:

  • Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega
  • ESP32 / ESP32-C3 / ESP32-S3
  • ESP8266
  • Raspberry Pi
  • STM32
  • Other microcontrollers and embedded platforms

A suitable biasing, amplification and signal-conditioning circuit should be used according to the microphone's electrical specifications.
